Is it better to work with a local SEO team or a national one?

I’ve been weighing up whether to hire a local agency or go with one of the larger companies that work with clients all over the UK. One thing I like about the idea of an SEO agency West Midlands is that they might have a better understanding of the local market and be easier to work with day to day. On the other hand, I’m not sure if location really matters when it comes to SEO. If you’ve worked with an SEO agency West Midlands, did being local make a noticeable difference, or would you have been just as happy with an agency based somewhere else?
